BERKELEY CA, FEBRUARY 10, 2005
Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced today that it is adding a performance of Sarah Jones’ Bridge & Tunnel on Wednesday, February 16 at 7 PM. Jones is workshopping her latest solo show at Berkeley Rep with Artistic Director Tony Taccone. Taccone staged the show’s stunning off-Broadway run as well as Jones’ previous hit, Surface Transit, which sold out its extended engagement at Berkeley Rep in 2003. The local production of Bridge & Tunnel is sponsored by bebe.

Sarah Jones’ Bridge & Tunnel explores what the American Dream means to 14 characters from 14 different cultures. A Jewish grandmother, a Pakistani accountant, a Chinese mother whose daughter is a lesbian…A young Latina, a hip-hop rapper, a migrant worker confined to a wheelchair…This chorus of voices emanates from across New York City—and Jones portrays each person with perfect pitch. During its successful run at New York’s 45 Bleecker Street Theatre, Bridge & Tunnel broke the off-Broadway box-office record for single-day sales.

Sarah Jones is an OBIE Award-winning playwright, actor and poet. Called “a master of the genre” by The New York Times, Jones and her solo shows Surface Transit, Women Can’t Wait and Bridge & Tunnel have garnered numerous honors, including a Helen Hayes Award, HBO’s Comedy Arts Festival’s Best One-Person Show Award and two Drama Desk nominations. Jones recently made history by suing the F.C.C. for its ban of her celebrated poem/song “Your Revolution,” eventually forcing reversal of the censorship.

Tony Taccone has staged more than 20 productions at Berkeley Rep, including Sarah Jones’ Surface Transit, Caryl Churchill’s Cloud Nine, David Edgar’s Continental Divide, Tony Kushner’s Homebody/Kabul, Culture Clash’s Culture Clash in AmeriCCa and Aeschylus’ The Oresteia (with Stephen Wadsworth). In 1992, he co-directed the world premiere of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Parts I & II at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. He was associate artistic director at Berkeley Rep for eight years prior to his appointment as artistic director in 1997.

Due to the workshop nature of this production, ticket prices for Bridge & Tunnel reflect a significant savings on the usual price of a show at Berkeley Rep: all seats for this performance are only $40. Berkeley Rep’s Thrust Stage and the box office are located at 2025 Addison Street, less than a block from Berkeley’s downtown BART station and close to AC Transit bus lines. The theatre is accessible to the handicapped, offering wheelchair seating and special services for those with hearing- or vision-impairment.
