All activities are held next door to the Theatre in the Nevo Education Center at 2071 Addison Street in downtown Berkeley. Families will be particularly excited to learn about a new series of classes for kids seven and under, said Rachel Fink, director of the School of Theatre. These include Imagine Me and You, a movement class for toddlers and their parents, or Clown Capers, a fun and playful workshop for kids. Teens will tune in to Politically Speaking, a new performance workshop in which they make their own radio shows, and adults wont want to miss Voice for the Outdoors, a class taught by vocal coach Domenique Lozano that prepares performers for outdoor summer theatre festivals. The spring session offers something for students of all ages and all levels, from beginners to professionals. All classes meet weekly for two to three hours with instructors who are nationally recognized teaching artists and theatre professionals. Class topics are as follows: Classes for youth (toddlers and grades K8) include Acting Adventures, Clown Capers, Imagine Me and You: A Dancing Exploration for Parent and Child, Musical Theatre, Play Production, Stage Combat 1: Unarmed, Stage Combat 2: Broadsword and Stories from Around the World: A Performance Workshop. Classes for teens include Acting Shakespeare, a Master Acting Intensive, Politically Speaking: A Teen Performance Lab and Stage Combat: Broadsword. Classes for adults include Acting (beginning through advanced), Acting Shakespeare, Cabaret: A Performance Workshop, Full Body Performance, Playwriting, Stage Combat: Broadsword and Voice for the Outdoor Stage. This session also features the new Emerging Artist Series and special classes such as Directing with Jonathan Moscone, Performance Workshop for Professional Actors with Roni Dengel and Vision and Revision: The Rewriting Process with Berkeley Reps dramaturg, Madeleine Oldham. There is also a special Spring Break Theatre Camp for children in grades 35. Students study acting, clowning, stage combat and music. In addition, by participating in the popular Play Creation class, students create an original play for performance using improvisation, movement, storytelling and written text. The Spring Break Theatre Camp takes place Monday, April 10 through Friday, April 14 from 9 AM to 3 PM. Tuition for the camp is $280; a limited number of financial-aid scholarships are available. Finally, the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre offers one-on-one audition coaches for adults and private voice teachers for children and teens. The School also hosts the Teen Council, which allows youth to participate in all aspects of the dramatic process: on stage, backstage and in front of the stage.
