BERKELEY CA, APRIL 13, 2006
Today, Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced the Summer Intensive at its School of Theatre, in which middle-school and high-school students immerse themselves in the craft and artistry of theatre. The first session, for students entering grades 6–8, will be held from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekdays from June 19 through July 14. The second session, for youth in grades 9–12, is scheduled from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays between July 17 and August 11.

“The Summer Theatre Intensive allows us to combine our two greatest assets: our first-class faculty and the professional resources of Berkeley Rep to create a program that challenges students to grow and thrive as young artists,” remarks Rachel Fink, director of the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre. “As we enter our sixth year, we are proud to see our students apply the skills and experiences that they’ve learned through this dynamic program.”

Participants in the Summer Theatre Intensive create and perform their own plays and, at the end of each four-week session, a public performance of the students’ work is presented at Berkeley Rep. All activities are held next door to the Theatre in the Nevo Education Center at 2071 Addison Street in downtown Berkeley. Tuition is $1,040 for session one and $1,100 for session two; a limited number of financial-aid scholarships are available.

Students in each session concentrate on core classes in acting, improvisation, movement and stage combat. They also choose electives from the disciplines of design and production (such as costumes, lighting and props) and from classes such as hip hop, playwriting and sign language for theatre. In addition, during the second session, high-school students study Shakespeare and voice. All classes are led by instructors who are nationally recognized teaching artists and theatre professionals.

The Berkeley Rep School of Theatre provides a wide array of programming for individuals of all ages. In addition to classes for youth and adults, the School offers Target® Story Builders, a drama workshop for elementary-school classrooms; the Student Matinee Series for middle- and high-school students; the Playmaking Project for high-school students and incarcerated youth; in-school residencies; teacher training; and a variety of outreach activities that encourage lifelong learning. Housed in the Nevo Education Center, the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre is supported by the Mosse Foundation for Arts and Education.
