“The Elementary and Secondary Education Act defines arts education as a core subject. It [reminds] all of us that the arts are a part of a complete education and requires kids to use creative and problem-solving skills. Arts education plays an essential part in children’s education. It enriches their learning experience and builds skills that they can apply across the curriculum.”—Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, August 18, 2009
At the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre, we understand the unique challenges facing California schools today. Now, more than ever, we must work together to reinforce arts education as a community value and as an integral part of our cultural fabric. By providing access and opportunities for participation in the arts, Berkeley Rep uses theatre as a means to challenge, thrill and galvanize what is best in the human spirit.
For the 2009/10 school year, we have developed a wide range of new FREE and low-cost outreach programming to Bay Area schools that covers multiple California content standards through hands-on, dynamic workshops. Whether bringing dramatic text to life or developing students’ original work, our professional teaching artists help students to expand their creative potential by challenging them to explore complex ideas and universal themes in literature and life. Using theatre arts techniques that encourage teamwork and ensemble-building, students will gain self-confidence and understand not only the importance of human connection but the joy of dynamic engagement with their creativity.
In response to increasing budget constraints on California schools, the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre is offering one FREE teaching hour to every public elementary, middle and high school in the Bay Area.* Additionally, we are able to offer low-cost rates for all of our programs, subsidized by our generous funders.
* Limited to one free teaching hour per public school in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties. Based on availability of Berkeley Rep School of Theatre staff. Limited to 30 students per classroom. Must sign and agree to Berkeley Rep School of Theatre booking agreement.
** Must be paid by personal check or credit card for use in educator’s own classroom.
