Teen One-Acts Festival

take a show from page to stage at the school of theatre!

What is the Teen One-Acts Festival? From acting, directing, designing and playwriting, to producing and technical theatre, we do it all. Each year, a panel of Teen Council members selects two original plays penned by Bay Area teens to be performed and produced by their peers. Each team member is given a Berkeley Rep mentor in their related field and the Festival is the result!

Congratulations cast and crew of the 2013 Teen One-Acts Festival!

The 2013 Teen One-Acts Festival featured Orpheum written by Frances Maples and Story by Leonard Watts written by Sophia Cannata-Bowman. 24 Bay Area teens from nine local communities acted, designed, directed and produced the 2013 Festival. This year welcomed a total of 425 guests over the course of one weekend in a new space in the Osher Studio in the Arts Passage at Berkeley Central.

Orpheum
Written by Frances Maples
Directed by Ivy Olesen

Isa loves Stacey. Stacey isn’t so sure. And things don’t get any easier when the Apocalypse hits and the girls find themselves separated by an incomprehensible bureaucracy. Now Isa must escape from heaven’s waiting-room if she wants to rescue her damsel in distress. But Stacey is sick of being a damsel and she’s not waiting around to be rescued. Frances Maples, one of the winners of Berkeley Rep’s 2012 Teen One-Acts Competition, returns with Orpheum, a music-infused tale of love, death and what happens next.

Story by Leonard Watts
Written by Sophia Cannata-Bowman
Directed by Elia Chuaqui

Who wouldn’t want to ditch the danger and drudgery of life in a coal-mining town for the bright lights of Hollywood? Leonard Watts not only made it out—he made it big! Now his screenplay is nominated for an Academy Award. But Hollywood endings are reserved for movies, not moviemakers, and running from your past won’t prevent it from catching up to you. Sophia Cannata-Bowman’s portrait of the bitter beauty of small town life skips across a swirl of memory in Story by Leonard Watts.

The Festival would not have been possible without the help of our Berkeley Rep staff mentors. This year’s in-kind donations were generously made by Semifreddi’s, Revival Bar + Kitchen, Sweet Adeline Bake Shop and Picante Catering. Thank you!
