Berkeley Rep’s SPEAKEASY will amplify all the glitz, glam, and Gatsby-era grandiosity that exemplify the Roaring 20s. Sit pretty with a cocktail in hand as you vie for an escape from your everyday humdrum with our silent and live auctions.

Get in the mood for SPEAKEASY with the Gershwins’ “Barbary Coast”

Barbary Coast

By George and Ira Gershwin

If you ask me what place
Is the hottest hot place,
Anywhere around—
Anywhere around—
Step up to the wicket,
Get yourself a ticket
San Francisco bound—
I said Frisco bound!
Let me take you to a place
Where humming birds sing bass.

Refrain
Oh, the minute that you strike it
You’ve got to like it—
The Barbary Coast—
Where baa, baa, black sheep baa, baa, baa the most.
If you like your music red hot
Yes, sir, I said hot!
You’d better run down
To hunky-dory honky-tonky town!
Don’t talk of other places,
Brother, if you don’t mind;
This is the one oasis—
It’s heaven and hell combined!
Ev’rything is open wide there,
Don’t need a guide there
The devil’s your host—
At the bar-bar-barbarous
Bar-Bar-Barbary Coast!

Behind-the-Scenes tours

For contributors of $75 and above

Our exclusive behind-the-scenes tours alternate between backstage tours of our downtown theatres (Roda Theatre and Thrust Stage), and our Harrison campus in west Berkeley.

These tours provide an opportunity for you to catch a glimpse of the rehearsal hall and costume, props, and scene shops at our Harrison Street campus and explore the pit, control booths, and catwalks in our theatres!

Special thanks to our Behind-the-Scenes tours event sponsors: Aurora Catering, Café Clem, PIQ, and Sweet Adeline Bakeshop.

We hope to see you at Behind-the-Scenes tours this season!

To keep you updated on the renovation phase of our Create Campaign, we will hold special hard hat tours of the mid-construction Thrust Stage. These tours will outline our need for the renovation and rejuvenation, including expanded audience amenities, a greater focus on sustainability and efficiency, and Meyer Sound’s Constellation system. Once the Thrust Stage has reopened in late winter 2016, we will hold tours of our Harrison Street campus, and detail the plans to come as our Campaign heads into its final phase.
