Support Berkeley Rep > Planned giving > Charitable remainder unitrusts
A charitable remainder unitrust allows you to make a gift to Berkeley Rep while providing yourself or others with income before Berkeley Rep is permitted to use your gift. To create this trust, you irrevocably transfer securities, money or other properties to a trustee, such as a bank or other fiduciary, which manages the assets and pays a fixed percentage of the asset value to you, your designated beneficiaries or both. These income payments are distributed annually or more frequently and can continue for the beneficiary’s life or for a term of up to 20 years. After that period, the remaining assets go to Berkeley Rep to support the Theatre according to your instructions.
In addition to helping you to support artistic excellence at Berkeley Rep, your charitable remainder trust relieves you of the burden of having to manage your assets yourself, and it may provide you with a larger income than those assets are currently earning. In addition, tax benefits may include an immediate charitable deduction, avoidance of capital gains tax upon the sale of any appreciated assets and an eventual estate tax savings.
You have several options to consider when making a gift from a charitable remainder trust. Here are some possibilities.
