Season 2012/13

Discover the 2012/13 season! Artistic Director Tony Taccone takes us on a tour of five of the seven plays.

Dear friends,

Each year at Berkeley Rep, we offer you a compelling collection of plays. We invite artists who inspire us to bring their vision and imagination to our stage. We present work from different eras that we hope will change the way you think about theatre—and the way you think about life. This year is no different.

I’m pleased to announce all seven plays in our season, and delighted to ask you to join us:

  • We begin with the West Coast premiere of Chinglish, the new Broadway comedy from Tony Award-winner David Henry Hwang that had audiences laughing in two different languages.
  • Next Obie-winner Lisa Peterson makes an ancient myth as timely as the evening news with An Iliad.
  • Mary Zimmerman (Arabian Nights, Metamorphoses) returns for the holidays with The White Snake, her enchanting adaptation of a romantic Chinese legend.
  • Then it’s the premiere of Troublemaker, a terrific new play we’ve commissioned from Dan LeFranc, a young writer who’s having a breakout year.
  • With Shakespeare’s Pericles, Obie Award-winner Mark Wing-Davey brings the Bard back with a bang.
  • Pulitzer Prize-winner Lawrence Wright is set to premiere Fallaci, his new play about the ferocious and fascinating Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci.
  • And finally, both Sarah Ruhl and Les Waters—the team behind Eurydice, In the Next Room and Three Sisters—return to Berkeley Rep with Dear Elizabeth, a beautiful story about the passionate friendship between poets Robert Lowell and Elizabeth Bishop.

When you subscribe to Berkeley Rep, you may not love every dish we serve—but you can’t deny that the menu is varied, the ingredients are fresh and the service is top-notch.

We strive to bring you shows that go beyond entertainment and tap into our shared humanity. The collective act of theatre relies on that—on you—on our curious, adventurous audience. I hope you’ll decide to join us.

Sincerely,

Tony Taccone
