Adapting Public Domain Stories for the Stage

Mon · In person

This class explores techniques for adapting public domain novels and stories into plays. We will discuss how to pick your source material, how to decide the style of adaptation, how to convert narration into dialogue, and how to approach the process of editing and devising. Using Ken Kelleher and Jennifer Le Blanc’s co-adaption of Far from the Madding Crowd, students will read and act scenes to better understand the process of developing a story for the stage.

Instructor: Jennifer Le Blanc adapted Jane Austen’s Persuasion which received its world premiere at San Jose Stage Company. She adapted Defoe’s Moll Flanders which received its world premiere at Pacific Repertory Theater. Jennifer is an alumna of PlayGround SF’s Writers Pool. She received her BA in English literature from UC Berkeley and her MFA in acting from the National Theatre Conservatory. Jennifer is an Associate Artist with Prague Shakespeare Company and SPARC (formerly the Livermore Shakespeare Festival).
