Gain the tools to flow with Shakespeare’s language through monologue work! Students will shift their perspective from memorizing words on a page to lifting units of thought. This class delves into the techniques developed in the UK specific to classical verse before applying them to contemporary text. Students will walk away with an invaluable new approach, giving them confidence across genres.
This class is ideal for folks wanting to prepare for specific auditions or simply tackle Shakespeare in a supportive and collaborative environment. Students will leave with one polished monologue as well as tools to tackle the next one!
All experience levels are welcome.
Instructor: Annie Obermeyer has worked at New York’s Public Theater, True Colors Theatre, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, American Conservatory Theater, and the National Playwrights Conference. Annie attended Oberlin College and trained at the National Theater Institute and the St Petersburg Theatre Arts Academy. She has taught acting at Oberlin College, the Bay School of San Francisco, and continues to teach at Berkeley Rep’s School of Theatre. She completed her MFA in Acting Classical and Contemporary text at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, recently playing in The Tragedie of Macbeth. Annie has spent the past two years honing her voice — apprenticing one-on-one with renowned Peter Coyote for narration and training with the celebrated Raz Kennedy for singing. She is currently developing an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet with Gregory Keller, a director for the Metropolitan Opera. She will be playing (and singing!) Juliet.
