Explore Shakespeare’s text through a practical, rehearsal-based approach, with a special focus on The Winter’s Tale. Students will gain a clearer understanding of the language and a more direct path into playing Shakespeare through the process of audition, preparation, and rehearsal. This class is excellent for actors looking to build confidence, strengthen their connection to the text, and expand their expressive range through text analysis, scansion, figures of speech, and choosing imaginative actions.
Taught by Paul Jennings, who recently uncovered the source of Shakespeare’s famous stage direction “Exit, pursued by a bear,” from The Winter’s Tale in research published by Oxford University Press!
Instructor: Paul Jennings is a Bay Area native actor/teacher. He has performed locally, including in Berkeley Rep’s 2016 production of Macbeth with Frances McDormand, and internationally at the Pop-Up Globe in Auckland, on the streets of Seoul, and at Shakespeare’s Globe in London as part of the 2013 International Actors’ Fellowship. His classes emphasize performance skills, close attention to text, and a deep understanding of Shakespeare’s world in order to make it accessible to actors and audiences of today.
